SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Sophomore southpaw Travis Weston pitched Cal Poly's first complete game in three years as the Mustangs clinched their weekend baseball series against Utah Valley with a 5-1 victory Saturday night inside Baggett Stadium.
Weston, one of three Mustangs who transferred from Boise State during the offseason, struck out a career-high 11 Wolverines without a walk and gave up just two hits, both doubles which resulted in the lone Utah Valley run of the game.
Cal Poly improved to 5-4 with the win, climbing one game over the .500 mark for the first time since winning the season opener against Nevada two weeks ago. Utah Valley fell to 2-4.
In notching Cal Poly's first complete game since Trent Shelton went the distance in a 16-0 win over Hawai'i on May 4, 2018, Weston retired the first 15 Utah Valley batters of Saturday's game before giving up a leadoff double to Mick Madsen in the sixth inning.
One out later, Jake Plecas doubled to drive home Madsen, closing the gap to 4-1.
Cal Poly got the run back in the seventh on Brooks Lee's RBI infield single to shortstop.
Weston (1-1) threw 102 pitches and lowered his ERA from 2.89 to 1.96, facing just three batters over the minimum. His previous high for strikeouts in a game was 10 in seven scoreless innings against Northern Colorado on Feb. 28, 2020, in Boise.
Cal Poly erupted for four runs in the first inning before an out was recorded.
Cole Cabrera doubled down the left-field line, took third on a wild pitch and came home on a single to right field by Myles Emmerson. A single by Lee and a walk to Tate Samuelson loaded the bases. Matt Lopez singled to right, scoring Emmerson, and Taison Corio followed with a two-run single up the middle.
That chased Utah Valley starter Nick Sims (1-1). Bobby Voortmeyer pitched seven strong innings in relief, allowing one run and four hits with one walk and three strikeouts, but the damage had already been done.
Cal Poly's 10 hits included three singles by Lee, lifting his average to .424. Cabrera, Emmerson and Lopez all added a pair of hits. Cabrera's first-inning double was the lone extra-base hit for the Mustangs.
Final game of the series will be played Sunday at 1 o'clock with Cal Poly junior southpaw Andrew Alvarez (1-0, 5.14 ERA) to face Utah Valley sophomore right-hander Mason Gray (0-1, 3.60 ERA).
