Nevada Evens Series Against Cal Poly on Saturday with 2-1 Victory

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- A wild pitch and a sacrifice fly accounted for both Nevada runs as the Wolf Pack evened their season-opening four-game non-conference baseball series against Cal Poly with a 2-1 victory Saturday night inside Baggett Stadium.
Shortstop Wyatt Tilley singled to open the seventh inning and eventually came home on a wild pitch for a 1-0 Nevada lead. In the ninth, Tilley tripled with one out and catcher Marco Valenzuela's sacrifice fly gave the Wolf Pack a 2-0 cushion.
Held scoreless on two hits through the first eight innings, Cal Poly finally broke through in the ninth, bunching together three hits for a run before the first out was recorded. Nevada held on, however, as a pickoff at second base, a fly ball to the outfield and a strikeout ended Cal Poly's hopes of a comeback and walk-off win.
The series is even at a game apiece with afternoon contests slated for Sunday at 1 and Monday at 3.
Cal Poly squandered numerous scoring opportunities throughout the game.
Nevada starter Owen Sharts issued three walks and a wild pitch in the first inning, two more walks in the second frame and a walk and hit batter in the third. The Mustangs stranded all seven runners on the basepaths.
Cal Poly also wasted a two-out triple by Tate Samuelson in the seventh inning and, despite a double and two singles in the ninth, was forced to settle for just one run. The Mustangs left 11 runners on base for the game.
The win went to Alejandro Murillo, the second of three Nevada pitchers used in the game. Murillo (1-0) allowed the run in the ninth and four hits over four frames with four strikeouts. Sharts didn't allow a hit or a run in four innings of work but gave up seven walks while striking out seven in his 99-pitch performance.
Southpaw Travis Weston (0-1), one of three Mustang transfers from Boise State, was the hard-luck loser. The redshirt freshman struck out eight, did not allow a walk and scattered six hits over six-plus innings. The lone run he allowed was unearned.
Kyle Scott gave up a run and two hits over three innings in relief of Weston with no walks and a pair of strikeouts.
Nevada's eight hits included a triple and single by Tilley and two singles by right fielder Anthony Flores.
The Mustang ninth began with a pinch-hit double by Mark Armstrong and a single by Matt Lopez, another pinch-hitter. After a Nevada pitching change, leadoff batter Cole Cabrera singled down the left-field line to score Armstrong.
Tyler Cochran settled down after that, picking off a Cal Poly runner at second base and retiring the next two batters on a flyout and strikeout for his first save of the year.
Cal Poly played without shortstop Brooks Lee, injured on a slide at home plate in Friday's season-opening 4-0 victory.
Third game of the series Sunday will start at 1 p.m. with junior southpaw Andrew Alvarez on the mound for Cal Poly. Nevada will counter with freshman right-hander Cam Walty.
