SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly has added another baseball player to its 2022 recruiting class.
Nation Wood, an outfielder who will be a sophomore at Saddleback College this spring, has accepted a Financial Aid Agreement and will transfer to Cal Poly for the 2022 baseball season. He joins seven others who have signed with the Mustangs.
Wood played 13 games at Saddleback last spring before the 2020 season was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The left-handed hitter compiled a .449 batting average with five doubles, two triples, three home runs and 19 RBIs with a pair of stolen bases.
Under head coach Sommer McCartney, Saddleback was 16-5 when the season came to an end.
A 2019 graduate of Lake Washington High School in Kirkland, Wash., Wood (6-1, 200) lettered four times in varsity baseball and posted a career .392 average with 83 hits in 78 games, including 28 doubles, two triples, 10 home runs and 62 RBIs. He stole 26 bases as well.
"Nation Wood will provide an experienced bat to our 2022 roster," said Mustang assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Teddy Warrecker. "Nation has a proven track record through high school, collecting 40 extra base hits in four years on varsity, and in an abbreviated community college season.
"Nation comes from a baseball family as his dad played at the University of Washington," Warrecker added, "and should fit in to our culture as he brings in a blue collar work ethic."
Wood hit .403 as a senior in 2019, following a .382 average as a junior, .400 as a sophomore and .364 in 10 games as a freshman.
After the Kangaroos won 26 of 28 games and claimed the 2A/3A King County Conference and Washington state 3A championships in 2019, Wood was named King County Conference MVP and earned All-King County Conference first-team honors for the third time.
Wood also landed on the Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association all-state team in both 2017 and 2019. Twice he helped Lake Washington to state titles in 2016 and 2019 and Wood was named to the Seattle Times "Star Times" all-state squad in 2019. He also landed on Perfect Game's Top-100 Incoming Junior College Freshman list.
Lake Washington won seven consecutive games after a first-round loss to claim the state 3A title in 2019.
Wood also played football at Lake Washington, primarily as a safety. He recorded 23 tackles, including one sack, as a senior and made 42 stops as a sophomore.
Also recruited by Washington, Seattle and Oregon, Wood chose to transfer to Cal Poly "because it provides everything I need to be as successful as I can be, both on the baseball field and after my playing career is over."
In November, Cal Poly signed six baseball players to the National Letter of Intent:
Steven Brooks, RHP, 6-6, 185, R/R, Elk Grove, Calif. (Cosumnes Oaks High School)
Cameron Butler, UTIL, 6-0, 170, R/R, Riverbank, Calif. (Big Valley Christian High School)
Martin Haswell, RHP, 6-0, 165, R/R, Auburn, Calif. (Placer High School)
