SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly will add a pair of Boise State transfers to its baseball roster in 2021.
Outfielder Reagan Doss from Round Rock, Texas, and first baseman Joe Yorke from Campbell, Calif., both freshmen during the 2020 season with the Broncos, will continue their baseball careers with the Mustangs.
Boise State, which resurrected its baseball program this spring after a 40-year hiatus, dropped the sport again, along with swimming and diving, earlier this month as part of an effort to save money amid a budget crisis spurred in part by the COVID-19 pandemic.
"This is one of the hardest decisions athletic departments have to make, but it comes at a time when we are facing the most serious financial challenge we have ever seen," fifth-year Boise State Director of Athletics Curt Apsey said on July 2. Apsey is a 1988 Cal Poly graduate and was a four-year starter for the Mustang men's soccer program before serving six years as an assistant coach with the Mustangs.
Doss (6-1, 200) played in eight games, including seven starts, with the Broncos before the season was cut short March 12 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He batted .333 with two home runs, seven RBIs and scored 10 runs.
Doss played all three outfield positions with six starts in right field and one in center field. The Round Rock High School graduate hit the first pitch he saw as a Bronco for a home run at No. 22 Texas on Feb. 22.
Doss played football and baseball at Round Rock High. He helped the baseball team reach the state quarterfinals as a junior and batted .393 as a senior with a .496 on-base percentage and 31 RBI, adding 20 stolen bases.
Doss was named an Austin Area Al-Star as a senior and earned All-District 13-6A first-team honors as well as Texas Sportswriters 6A All-State honorable mention. He was a strong safety in football, making 66 tackles as a sophomore.
Yorke (6-4, 278) played in 12 of Boise State's 14 games this spring, all starts, and hit .275 with 11 hits, all singles, and eight RBIs. He struck out just four times in 54 plate appearances, was hit by pitches four times and drew 10 walks.
A graduate of Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose, Calif., Yorke earned one letter in football and four in baseball. He earned first-team All West Catholic Athletic League honors in both his junior and senior baseball seasons with the Monarchs.
Yorke batted .377 as a junior with an on-base percentage of .506 and an OPS of 1.115, then posted a .360 batting average as a senior.
Both Doss and Yorke will be redshirt freshmen next spring and will have four years of eligibility remaining at Cal Poly.
