
Graduation Rate Among Student-Athletes Climbs to 86 Percent

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly's Graduation Success Rate among its 550 student-athletes climbed to 86 percent, according to the NCAA Graduation Rates Report released by the NCAA on Tuesday.
That figure represents a one-percent rise from a year ago and a 17-percent increase of Cal Poly's GSR over the past 10 years.
Women's golf and women's tennis led the way, each with a 14-percent improvement in its GSR. Women's tennis earned a 13-percent increase in its Federal Graduation Rate while women's golf jumped 11 percent.
The current Graduation Rates Report compiles data about students and student-athletes entering as freshmen in 2013, the most recent graduating class for which the required six years of information is available.
"These numbers reflect what we have always known about the special nature of Cal Poly student-athletes," said Cal Poly Director of Athletics Don Oberhelman. "These men and women embody our motto of 'Athletic and Academic Excellence'
"Our entire staff emphases the 'student' in student-athlete, and helping develop better future leaders in all our communities," Oberhelman added. "Louise Torgerson, Kyle Ross, Zach Reed and the entire Mustang Success Center unit work tirelessly with our student-athletes to help them earn their degrees."
Nine of Cal Poly's athletic teams posted a GSR of over 90 percent, one more than a year ago. They include men's golf, men's basketball, men's tennis, men's cross country/track and field, women's golf, women's soccer, softball, women's tennis and women's swimming and diving.
Men's golf, men's basketball, men's tennis, women's golf, women's tennis and women's swimming and diving all posted 100 percent graduation success rates. Men's tennis and men's golf are the lone Mustang teams with an FGR score of 100 percent.
In addition to women's tennis and women's golf, teams posting improvement in their GSR rate over a year ago include men's swimming and diving (10 percent), men's basketball (9 percent), women's volleyball (8 percent), football (6 percent), men's cross country/track and field (5 percent) and softball (1 percent).
Men's golf and women's swimming and diving maintained their GSR scores of a year ago.
As for the Federal Graduation Rate, softball (16 percent), women's tennis (13 percent), women's golf (11 percent), men's golf (11 percent) and men's swimming and diving (10 percent) made the biggest jumps.
