
Cal Poly Falls to Fresno State, 24-16, in Dual Wrestling Meet

FRESNO, Calif. -- Tom Lane won my major decision while Bernie Truax and Joshy Cortez earned decisions, but the Cal Poly wrestling team fell 24-16 to host Fresno State on Thursday inside the Save Mart Center.
Lane improved his record for the season to 10-3 with an 11-0 major decision over Isaiah Perez at 197 pounds. The two-time national qualifier scored a takedown and four-point near fall in the first period, an escape and takedown in the second period and a penalty point plus riding time in the final period for the win.
Truax opened the dual meet with a 7-2 decision over Adam Kemp at 165 pounds. Truax notched a first-period takedown, an escape int he second period and a penalty point, takedown and riding time in the last period to lift his record to 9-8.
Cortez (pictured at right) was a 4-0 winner over Greg Gaxiola at 149. Now 6-7 for the season, Cortez broke a scoreless tie with a reversal, penalty point and riding time in the final period for the win.
Mustang 125-pounder Benny Martinez won by forfeit, tying the dual meet at 13-13, but Fresno State claimed three of the final four bouts to win going away.
Scoring the only fall of the match was Brandon Martino at 174 pounds in 3 minutes, 48 seconds, for Fresno State (2-4).
Now 2-2 in dual meets, Cal Poly returns home to host Northern Illinois on Friday, Jan. 10, at 7 p.m. in Mott Athletics Center.

At the Menlo Tournament on Saturday, Wyatt Cornelison placed second at 141 pounds while Jack Lenox (125 pounds) and Daniel Vizcarra both placed third.
Cornelison was 3-1 in the one-day topurnament, dropping a 16-4 major decision to Dalton Brady of Arizona Christian in the final round.
Lenox posted a 4-1 mark, bouncing back from an opening-round 7-6 defeat with four consecutive wins, including a 6-2 decision over Elias Gonzales of Arizona Christian in the consolation finals.
Vizcarra was 5-1, earning an 11-4 decision over Devin Everk of Menlo College in the consolation finals.
Max Anderson compiled a 3-2 record at 157 pounds, finishing one win shy of placing.
