
No. 6 Cal Poly Beach Volleyball Takes Down No. 5 Long Beach State

FOLSOM, Calif. — The sixth-ranked Cal Poly beach volleyball picked up a big conference win Sunday at the final day of the Big West Beach Volleyball Challenge hosted by Sacramento State, beating No. 5 Long Beach State 3-2 to improve its record to 19-3 overall.
The No. 6 Mustangs picked up wins at the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 spots to secure the win over the fifth-ranked 49ers (15-3).
Sophomore Torrey Van Winden and partner Tiadora Miric won their match in straight sets at the No. 1 position (21-10, 21-9) to improve their pairs record to 14-5 this season. They combined to go 4-1 at the Big West Challenge.
Cal Poly's No. 2 pairing of sophomore Emily Sonny and junior Samantha Manley took down Long Beach's Sasha Karelov and Anete Brinke in three sets that included a back-and-forth final set. The Mustangs' duo was able to pull out the win 21-13, 17-21, 24-22 to move to their pairs record to a team-best 20-1 this season.
Senior Taylor Nelson and junior Adlee Van Winden won their match in straight sets at the No. 3 spot 21-16, 22-20 to secure the win for the Mustangs, who went 4-1 at the Big West Challenge with the only loss coming against No. 3 Hawai'i.
Nelson and Adlee Van Winden improved their record to 15-1. The duo went 4-1 over the weekend.
Cal Poly is now 7-3 this season when playing opponents who are ranked.
They now get ready to travel to Palo Alto next weekend to play in a tournament hosted by Stanford. There, they will take on the 13th-ranked Cardinal, No. 2 UCLA, No. 19 Saint Mary's and Pacific. The Mustangs play at noon and 3 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.
