
No. 7 Cal Poly Beach Volleyball Sweeps in Bakersfield, Wins 11th Straight

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The Cal Poly beach volleyball team continued its strong start to the season Saturday by winning both of its matches to earn their 10th and 11 wins in a row. The No. 7 Mustangs (14-2, 1-0) defeated CSU Bakersfield in their first match of the day 5-0 to win its first conference match of the season and took down 15th ranked Loyola Marymount 3-2 later in the d.
Cal Poly didn't drop a single set against the Roadrunners (3-4). The Mustangs' No. 1 duo of sophomore Torrey Van Winden and freshman Tia Miric won their match against Sydney Hayes and Emily Hansen 25-23, 21-8. The No. 2 pairing of sophomore Emily Sonny and junior Samantha Manley beat Sarah Garrow and Desiree Sukhov 21-14, 21-15.
Junior Adlee Van Winden and senior Taylor Nelson won their match at the No. 3 spot 21-12, 21-11 over Emily Lopes and Mattison Degarmo. The No. 4 pairing of seniors Raeann Greisen and Hannah Hubbard took down Briannah Mariner and Aleksandra Djordjevi 21-13, 21-12 and the No. 5 duo of sophomore Heather Pembroke and freshman Macy Gordon beat Hannah Manzanares and Sidney Wicks 21-8, 21-12.
In their second match of the day against the 15th ranked Lions (7-7), the Mustangs picked up wins at the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 spots to secure the win.
Torrey Van Winden and Miric easily took down LMU's No. 1 duo of Savannah Slattery and Jessie Prichard in straight sets 21-9, 21-9 to win their fourth straight match. Miric and Van Winden are now 9-4 this season.
Sonny and Manley defeated Sara Kovac and McKayla Ferris 21-13, 21-15 to improve their perfect record to 16-0, the best start a Cal Poly pairing has had in its programs history.
Nelson and Adlee Van Winden beat Chloe Reinig and Kekai Whitford at the No. 3 spot 22-20, 21-17 to also keep their perfect record on the season at 10-0.
With the two wins, the seventh ranked Mustangs improve their record to 14-2 and are 1-0 in the Big West (the best record in program history).
Cal Poly next travels to Irvine on Monday to take on Oregon at 3 p.m. and Irvine Valley College at 4 p.m.
