Cal Poly Falls to New Mexico 3-1 in 10 Innings at College Baseball Classic

SURPRISE, Arizona – Cal Poly's magic Friday night, rallying for six runs in the final two innings for a 10-inning 8-7 win over Gonzaga, failed to materialize Saturday night.

New Mexico snapped a 1-1 tie with two runs in the top of the 10th inning and held on to defeat Cal Poly 3-1 on the second day of the College Baseball Classic in Surprise Stadium.

Cal Poly, which squandered a few scoring opportunities early in the game, was shut down by a pair of New Mexico relievers, falling to 1-1 on the year. The Lobos also are 1-1.

Freshman designated hitter Blake Wagenseller (pictured above) put Cal Poly on the scoreboard with a solo home run to left field in the fourth inning and almost hit a second round tripper which was caught on the warning track by Danny Collier a foot from the wall in the ninth inning.

Nathaniel Garley (1-0) relieved New Mexico starter Robert Gasser in the fifth inning and tossed five scoreless innings with one walk and seven strikeouts. Chris Tripp secured the final two outs for a save.

Cal Poly left two runners on base in the second inning, left the bases loaded in the third and also left a pair of runners on base after Wagenseller's home run in the fourth. The final 18 Mustang batters of the game failed to get a hit.

Cal Poly's five hits included a home run and single by Wagenseller and a double by Alex McKenna. Tate Samuelson and Nick DiCarlo added singles.

Senior southpaw Trent Shelton allowed just one run and three hits over six-plus innings with two walks and eight strikeouts. Sophomore right-hander Connor Redmond (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up two runs (one earned) and two hits over four innings with no walks and five strikeouts.

Cal Poly will play No. 2 Oregon State (2-0) on Sunday at noon PST with junior right-hander Bobby Ay on the mound for the Mustangs. The Beavers defeated New Mexico 5-2 on Friday and Gonzaga 4-3 on Saturday.
