
Cal Poly Contests Pair of Pac-12 Dual Meets on the Road This Week

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly wraps up its dual wrestling meet schedule with a trio of Pac-12 Conference matches over the next two weeks.
Coach Jon Sioredas' Mustangs visit CSU Bakersfield on Wednesday night and Oregon State on Saturday night. Cal Poly closes out the 2017-18 regular season with a Feb. 11 matchup against Arizona State inside Mott Athletics Center.
Cal Poly dropped a 23-14 decision to Stanford in its Pac-12 opener last week, falling to 0-5 on the year. CSU Bakersfield is 4-9 overall following a 24-14 loss to Arizona State and Oregon State sports a 3-5 mark after defeating Northern Colorado 34-10 on Sunday.
Cal Poly has a pair of wrestlers in the NCAA's initial coaches' panel rankings for the 2017-18 wrestling season. Senior Colton Schilling (pictured above) is ranked No. 31 at 141 pounds while sophomore Tom Lane drew a No. 23 ranking at 197 pounds.
Schilling improved to 10-5 on the year with a technical fall in the Stanford dual. He has a team-leading seven falls this season.
Lane earned a shutout decision against Stanford and is 13-5 for the year with one fall.
Mustang sophomore Matt Wilhelm wrestled up a weight class at 184 and his decision in the Stanford dual lifted his record to 12-6 with a pair of pins. Junior Joshy Cortez evened his record at 9-9 with a decision against Stanford.
CSU Bakersfield sports a quartet of ranked wrestlers. Matt Williams (25-5) is No. 14 at 197 pounds while 157-pounder Coleman Hammond (24-11) is ranked No. 16. Also, Sergio Mendez (16-10) is No. 27 at 125 and Sean Nickell (18-8) is No. 28 at 133.
For Oregon State, 285-pounder Amarveer Dhesi (13-3) is ranked No. 11 while 125-pounder Ronnie Bresser (14-4) is No. 6 and 197-pounder Corey Griego (14-5) is No. 16.
Cal Poly defeated CSU Bakersfield 21-18 a year ago at Righetti High School, erasing an 18-14 deficit with a major decision by Cortez and a decision by Colt Shorts. The Roadrunners still hold a 29-19-2 advantage in the series.
Visiting Oregon State for the second straight year, Cal Poly dropped a 25-10 verdict last season and is 10-38 all time against the Beavers.
Cal Poly returns to Corvallis on Feb. 25 for the Pac-12 Championships.
