SAN LUIS OBISPO – The third seeded Cal Poly beach volleyball team went 2-1 at the Big West Conference Beach Volleyball Tournament in Pismo Beach, Calif., advancing it to the consolation quarterfinal on Saturday.
The Mustangs started off the tournament on a strong note, as they quickly swept the No. 6 seed Cal State Bakersfield 5-0.
Emily Sonny and Hannah Hubbard, the Mustangs' No. 1 pair, beat Caroline Grasso and Sara Little 21-14, 21-13, while the No. 2 pair of Adlee Van Winden and Taylor Nelson beat Jocelyn Rodriguez and Madisen Busler 21-16, 21-14.
Cal Poly's No. 3 pair of Raeann Greisen and Holland Boege beat Sarah Garrow and Ashley Pratter 22-20, 21-15, while Savannah Niemen and Anna Gorman beat Kayla Tinker and Ally Barber at the No. 4 spot 21-8 21-16.
The No. 5 pair of Dora Beilin and Brayden Gruenewald beat Fabiana Andrade and Hannah Manzanares 21-14, 21-16, advancing the Mustangs to the second round of the Big West Conference Tournament.
The Mustangs took on second seeded Hawai'i in their next match, where they put up a fight, but couldn't hold on.
Sonny and Hubbard pushed Mikayla Tucker and Morgan Martin to three sets, but fell 21-16, 16-21, 15-13.
Van Winden and Nelson picked up another win against Hawai'i's No. 2 pair, as they beat Ka'iwi Schucht and Nikki Taylor 21-18, 21-17.
Greisen and Boege fell to Kai'iwi Schucht and Emily Maglio 24-22, 21-18, while Niemen and Gorman were beat by Ari Homayun and Carly Kan 21-13, 21-18.
Beilin and Gruenewald won their first set against Amy Ozee and Hannah Zalopany, but fell in their second two, losing the match 19-21, 21-15, 15-9.
Sonny and Hubbard took Julie Haake and Katie Soto to three sets and came out with a win, 19-21, 21-12, 16-14.
Van Winden and Nelson beat Mattie Leiphardt and Nicki Williams 21-6, 21-12, giving the pair an undefeated record on the day.
Greisen and Boege beat Aeryn Owens and Erin Indermill 21-13, 17-21, 15-13, while Niemen and Gorman beat Kristey Markle and Autumn Russell 21-14, 21-16 and Beilin and Gruenewald beat Nic Pinkney and Nico Stork 21-15, 19-21, 16-14.
The Mustangs' win over the Matadors advances them to the consolation quarterfinal, where the squad will take on CSU Bakersfield for the second time this tournament.
