SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Fresno State scored three runs in both the first and third innings and five Bulldog pitchers made them stand up for a 6-3 victory over Cal Poly in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday night before 1,325 inside Baggett Stadium.
Third baseman Jesse Medrano drove in four of the six Bulldog runs with a three-run triple in the first inning and an RBI double in the third for Fresno State, which swept the pair of midweek games against the Mustangs and evened its overall mark at 20-20.
Cal Poly, held to just three runs and four hits after producing 25 runs and 43 hits in a Big West series win over No. 8 Cal State Fullerton over the weekend, fell to 18-21.
First baseman Aaron Arruda belted his 10th home run of the season, a solo shot leading off the third inning, for Fresno State and catcher Carter Bins completed the scoring for the Bulldogs with a run-scoring single.
Cal Poly answered with two runs in the fifth on backup catcher Myles Emmerson's (pictured at left) double to left field and one more in the eighth on first baseman Michael Sanderson's (pictured above) RBI double to right-center field.
Arruda, who now has 46 RBI this season, and Medrano each had two of Fresno State's eight hits. Cal Poly's four hits were by four different players.
Ryan Jensen (2-0), the second of five Bulldog pitchers, earned the win with two scoreless innings of work on the mound. The loss went to Cal Poly starter Kyle Smith (1-3), who allowed four runs (one earned) and three hits over two-plus innings.
After giving up two runs in relief of Smith, sophomore right-hander Austin Dondanville settled in and did not allow a run over his final four innings on the mound. He struck out four and did not walk a batter over 4 2/3 innings.
All three Fresno State runs in the first inning were unearned because of a one-out throwing error in the infield.
Cal Poly continues a stretch of five non-conference games this weekend with a three-game series against UCLA at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Game times are 6 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 o'clock Sunday.
Coach Larry Lee's Mustangs, who have the bye in the Big West schedule this weekend, return home to host Pepperdine next Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Baggett Stadium.
