Nelson and Van Winden Go 2-0 Against No. 5 LBSU and No. 16 LMU

SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly beach volleyball team put up a fight against two ranked teams on Wednesday in Manhattan Beach, Calif. but couldn't hold on, as they fell to No. 5 Long Beach State 4-1 and No. 16 Loyola Marymount 3-2.
The Mustangs' No. 2 pair of Adlee Van Winden and Taylor Nelson beat Kekai Whitford and Brittnay Estes on court two 21-13, 21-15.
The No. 3 pair of Brayden Gruenewald and Raeann Greisen pushed Jessie Prichard and Sara Kovac to three sets, but fell short 21-16, 15-21, 15-8, while the No. 4 pair of Holland Boege and Savannah Niemen pushed Emma Doud and Veronica Nederend to three sets but lost 16-21, 22-20, 15-8.
Heather Pembroke paired up with Jacqui Martin at the No. 5 spot and took on Kristen Castellanos and Erin Williams, but fell 21-17, 21-18.
The Mustangs started their second match of the day against conference opponent LBSU.
Hubbard and Sonny were neck and neck in their first set, but fell 25-23, 21-14 against Nele Barber and Rachel Nieto.
Nelson and Van Winden put the Mustangs' first point on the board after beating Sasha Karelov and Kobi Pekich 21-16, 21-19.
Greisen and Gruenewald were defeated by Anete Brinke and Hailey Harward 21-17, 21-9.
Niemen and Boege took their match to three sets for a second time on Wednesday but fell to Morea Wagner and Heather Weiss 21-18, 19-21, 15-11.
Pembroke and Martin also pushed their opponents top three sets but fell to Janelle Hudson and Megan Kruidhof 21-15, 18-21, 15-3.
The Mustangs are now 10-18 on the season and 4-5 in conference play. Cal Poly will be back in the sand on San Jose State, San Francisco and Sacramento State on Saturday April 15.
