
Cal Poly Falls to Arizona State 30-15 in Pac-12 Dual Wrestling Meet

TEMPE, Ariz. — Colton Schilling and J.T. Goodwin won by fall but Cal Poly dropped seven of the remaining eight bouts, falling 30-15 to Arizona State in a Pac-12 Conference dual wrestling meet Sunday afternoon in Wells Fargo Arena.
In the dual televised by Pac-12 Networks Arizona, Schilling won by fall for the second time this week and the sixth time in his last seven wins while Goodwin earned his third fall in his last four triumphs.
Cal Poly falls to 4-5 overall and 0-2 in Pac-12 duals while Arizona State improved to 3-1 for the season and 1-0 in conference matches.
Arizona State won the first two bouts by decision before Schilling evened the score at 6-6 by pinning Nikko Villarreal in 3 minutes, 25 seconds, at 141 pounds for his eighth fall of the year.
Schilling scored a takedown and two-point near fall for a 4-0 lead in the first period. Villarreal chose the bottom position to start the second period and Schilling pinned Villarreal just 25 seconds into the period for the win, improving to 12-6 on the year and 6-2 in dual meets.
Arizona State rebuilt its lead with a decision and a trio of falls for a 27-6 advantage before Cal Poly got on the scoreboard again.
At 184, Mitchell Woods (pictured above) earned a 6-2 decision over Connor Small, scoring a takedown in the first period, an escape and takedown in the second period and riding time to improve to 8-5 for the season.
Goodwin stepped onto the mat next and needed just 75 seconds to pin Austyn Harris at 197 pounds. Goodwin scored one takedown before the fall in 1:15 and is now 6-7 for the year.
Arizona State falls were recorded by No. 20 Joshua Maruca in 4:13 at 149 pounds, No. 9 Anthony Valencia in 43 seconds at 165 and No. 1 Zahid Valencia in 3:36 at 174.
Sun Devil 157-pounder Joshua Shields, ranked No. 7 this week, was a 6-1 winner over No. 19 Colt Shorts, scoring a reversal in the second period and a four-point near fall in the final stanza.
Cal Poly is off next week, returning to action with a pair of home duals against Wyoming on Friday, Jan. 20, at 7 p.m. in Mott Athletics Center and Air Force on Sunday, Jan. 22, at noon in the Performing Arts Center.
Deadline to register for Cal Poly's Wrestling Alumni and Supporter Weekend is Tuesday. The weekend includes a pre-match social on Friday, Jan. 20, from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. in the tent behind the Mott Athletics Center and a crab bake dinner at the Avila Lighthouse Suites on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 5 p.m. in the Point San Luis Conference Room at Avila Lighthouse Suites, 550 Front Street in Avila Beach. Rooms are available through the Cal Poly Wrestling Block.
The homecoming dual meet against Air Force inside Harman Hall features VIP seating. Alumni and supporters of the wrestling team will be honored at intermission.
Prices are $55 for the crab bake only and $75 for the crab bake with tickets to both dual meets, including VIP seating at the Performing Arts Center.
