Cal Scores Six in Fourth Inning En Route to 7-1 Victory Over Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal scored six runs in the fourth inning, five of them unearned after a two-out error, and went on to beat Cal Poly 7-1 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday afternoon in Baggett Stadium.

The No. 17 Bears, now 20-9 on the year, utilized four hits, two walks, a hit batter and the two-out infield error for the six runs, snapping a scoreless game.

Cal Poly, 19-12 for the season, averted a shutout with a run in the eighth inning on two walks and an RBI single by designated hitter Josh Olivarria (pictured above) through the left side of the Cal infield.

Each team collected just five hits.

Cal Poly's hits all were singles by five different players. Cal's total included a single and double by Brett Cumberland and a triple by Preston Grand Pre. Cumberland and Aaron Knapp both hit two-run singles in the fourth inning for the Bears.

Freshman right-hander Cam Schneider (1-2) did not allow a hit in three scoreless innings before running into trouble in the fourth when Cal loaded the bases with a single, double and walk. All three runners eventually came home, though only one of the runs was earned. Schneider struck out four.

The win went to Cal starter Tanner Dodson (1-2) as he scattered four hits over six scoreless innings with two walks and three strikeouts.

Cal Poly stranded runners at second and third in the sixth inning and a pair of double plays in the fourth and fifth frames thwarted Mustang rallies as well.

Coach Larry Lee's Mustangs, coming off a series win over Cal State Fullerton last weekend, resume Big West Conference play Friday night with the first of three games against first-place Hawai'i.
