Pepperdine Scores 11 in Second En Route to 12-4 Win Over Cal Poly

MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine parlayed six hits, three hit batters and a pair of walks into an 11-run second-inning uprising and beat Cal Poly 12-4 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
The Waves, who sent 15 batters to the plate in the inning, snapped a six-game losing streak, improved to 4-8 for the year and avenged a 6-5 walk-off loss to the Mustangs last Tuesday inside Baggett Stadium.
Playing its first road game of the season and opening a 10-game road trip, Cal Poly had its five-game winning streak halted, falling to 10-3 on the season.
Cal Poly scored twice in the first inning on a solo home run by Brett Barbier and a run-scoring single by Michael Sanderson.
The rest of the game, however, belonged to Pepperdine after erupting for 11 runs in the second frame. Seven of the runs were unearned because of a throwing error at the plate.
The Waves added a run in the sixth and Cal Poly scored its final two runs in the ninth on Sanderson's groundout and a Pepperdine error.
Both winning pitcher Easton Lucas and loser Jarred Zill are 1-1 on the year. Lucas retired the final 13 Mustang batters he faced after the first inning and finished with one walk and three strikeouts. Zill allowed eight runs (four earned) and three hits in 1 2/3 innings.
Redshirt freshman Spencer Howard (pictured above) pitched four strong innings in relief for Cal Poly, allowing one run and three hits with seven strikeouts. Andrew Bernstein and Bobby Ay each threw one scoreless frame.
Cal Poly's five hits include two doubles by Kyle Marinconz and Barbier's home run, his first of the season.
Pepperdine collected nine hits, led by Matthew Kanfer and Chase Lambert, each with two singles.
Cal Poly continues its 10-game road trip with a three-game series at Grand Canyon this weekend.
