SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Moments after Nick Torres tied the game with a three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning, Austin Kron belted a two-run double to cap a four-run Cal Poly uprising in the bottom of the frame as the 2016 Mustangs defeated the Alumni 14-10 in baseball's annual Alumni Game on Saturday in Baggett Stadium.
Cal Poly led 10-3 before the Alumni erupted for seven runs in the seventh to knot the score. Chris Hoo's RBI single, Peter Van Gansen's two-run single and a Mustang error accounted for the first four runs and Torres smashed his game-tying home run over the center field fence.
A pair of bases-loaded walks preceeded Kron's two-run double in the bottom of the seventh, giving Cal Poly a 14-10 lead. There was no scoring the rest of the way.
Catcher/first baseman Brett Barbier (pictured above) had three of Cal Poly's 16 hits, including a triple. Infielder Alec Smith and outfielder Alex McKenna both added a pair of hits – McKenna hitting a second-pitch home run leading off the first inning.
The Alumni collected 10 hits, including three by Hoo. Brian Mundell contributed a two-run home run in the sixth inning.
Mustang starter Cam Schneider pitched five strong innings, allowing one run and two hits. Freshman southpaw Justin Bruihl tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief after the Alumni tied the score in the seventh and earned the win, giving up just one hit.
Cal Poly officially opens its 2016 season next weekend with a four-game series against former Big West rival Pacific in Baggett Stadium. The season opener on Friday begins at 6 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday and a 1 p.m. series finale Sunday.
The Mustangs play their first 12 games of the season at home.
