Cal Poly Places Fourth in Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday

RENO, Nevada — Six Cal Poly wrestlers, led by Colt Shorts and J.T. Goodwin, were place winners as the Mustangs produced their best showing in several years at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday inside the Reno Events Center.
Shorts placed second at 157 pounds with a 4-1 record while Goodwin claimed runner-up honors at 197 pounds with a 3-1 mark.
Placing fourth at 149 pounds was Joshy Cortez while three Mustangs placed sixth — Mitch Woods at 184, Travis Berridge at 174 and Spencer Empey at 285.
As a team, Cal Poly finished fourth among 30 schools, scoring 82.5 points. Oklahoma State claimed the team title with 146.5 points, followed by Michigan State (129) and Wyoming (122.5). Oklahoma State and Wyoming each produced a pair of individual champions.
Shorts earned one fall, two decisions and a major decision en route to his spot in the 157-pound finals, where he was decisioned by No. 13 Archie Colgan of Wyoming 3-1. Colgan scored a takedown with 19 seconds left to snap a 1-1 tie.
In the second round, Shorts scored an escape with 1:13 to go for a 4-2 lead against Payton Tawater of Colorado Mesa and held on for the 4-3 win. Shorts tallied a two-point near fall with 36 seconds remaining for a 3-0 lead against Jacob Thalin of CSU Bakersfield and went on to post a 4-0 decision in the quarterfinals. Shorts notched a pair of four-point near falls and two takedowns en route to a 13-4 major decision over Fred Green of Boise State in the semifinals.
Shorts is now 15-8 for the season. He was ranked No. 19 in his weight class by The Open Mat last week, the first nationally ranked Mustang in two years.
Goodwin carried a 2-5 mark into the tournament, but posted two falls and a decision to reach the finals at 197 pounds. Derek White of Oklahoma State ended Goodwin's run with a 7-3 decision in the championship match.
Goodwin pinned 14th-ranked and top-seeded Corey Griego of Oregon State in 4 minutes, 30 seconds, and Wyatt Koelling of Missouri in 2:29 before posting an 8-4 decision over Morgan Smith of Simon Fraser in the semifinals, extending a 5-4 lead with an escape and takedown in the third period for the win.
Cortez was 5-2 at 149 pounds, winning one match by major decision, three by decision and one by medical forfeit. Against Josh Reyes of Clackamas in the consolation final for third and fourth place, the match was tied 1-1 after three periods. Reyes scored a takedown with 30 seconds to go in the first overtime period for the 3-1 sudden-victory decision and third place.
At 184, Woods lost his first match in a 3-2 decision against Kaydn Del Toro of Boise State, then won five straight matches in the wrestlebacks, including one by fall, en route to a sixth-place finish.
Berridge won his first three matches at 174, all by decision, before suffering an injury in the semifinals and forfeited the rest of his matches.
Empey recorded a 4-3 mark at 285 with three wins by decision and one by technical fall.
Mustang redshirt Curtis Booth scored a remarkable fall in the wrestle backs at 141 pounds. Trailing 12-0 against Alex Rich of Oregon State, Booth notched a reversal with 20 seconds remaining and pinned Rich with four seconds to go in their bout.. Booth finished with a 3-2 record.
Cal Poly takes a break for the holidays, returning to action with a Tuesday, Jan. 3, dual meet against No. 22 West Virginia at 2 p.m. inside the Mott Athletics Center.
