
Six Cal Poly Wrestlers, Led by Movahedi, Place in Roadrunner Open

CLOVIS, Calif. — Cal Poly 184-pounder Sohrab Movahedi captured top honors at the Roadrunner Open held Sunday at Clovis North High School.
Movahedi scored a major decisions and three decisions en route to the title.
After a first-round bye, Movahedi (pictured above, right) earned an 11-2 major decision against Jovan Villalobos, then edged Samson Imonode of Army in a 7-5 overtime sudden victory. In the semifinals, Movahedi was a 6-4 winner over Kaydn Del Toro of Boise State and claimed the crown with a 3-2 decision over former CSU Bakersfield standout Adam Fierro.
Placing second in the 285-pound weight class was Spencer Empey.
After a bye in the opening round, Empey pinned Zak Levatino in 3 minutes, 37 seconds, then shaded Tyler Kral of Purdue 1-0. Empey won by forfeit in the semifinals before falling to Nathan Butler of Stanford in a 6-5 decision.
Colt Shorts reached the semifinals at 157 pounds before suffering an 8-0 major decision loss to Russell Parsons of Army. After a 9-4 decision in the wrestlebacks, Shorts placed fourth as he was pinned by Paul Fox of Stanford.
David Gonzalez placed fifth at 125 pounds while Yoshito Funakoshi was sixth at 133. Joe Granger finished sixth at 157.
Cal Poly will take a break for Thanksgiving, returning to action Dec. 2-3 at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.
