SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly's final outdoor dual meet of the 2016-17 season takes place Friday afternoon as the Mustangs host the United States Military Academy (Army).
Cal Poly held its annual Green vs. Gold intrasquad meet outdoors in October as well as its season-opening dual meet against San Francisco State two weeks ago.
The Mustangs carry a 3-3 dual meet record into Friday's 1 p.m. match in the University Union plaza, already equalling their total number of dual victories of a year ago.
Cal Poly has defeated San Francisco State, No. 27 Indiana and Cal Baptist while falling to Stanford, Northwestern and Rutgers.
Army is 0-2 in duals with losses to Penn State and Drexel last weekend after opening the season at the Southeast Duals hosted by Virginia Tech.
Army is led by 157-pound senior Ben Parsons (6-1), who posted a 28-13 record, including a team-best 8-2 record in dual meets, a year ago. He was ranked as high as 13th by InterMat throughout the season and led Army in wins, dual wins and bonus-point wins. He also tied for the team-lead in technical falls and major decisions and was 27-12 as a sophomore two years ago.
Parsons claimed the 157-pound title at the Southeast Open two weeks ago.
Other place winners in the Open Division included Logan Everett (second at 141 pounds), Rocco Caywood (second at 197), Austin Harry (fourth at 133), Andrew Mendel (sixth at 165) and Jack Wedholm (sixth at 174).
Army 174-pounder Ben Harvey also is 6-1 on the year and placed first in the frosh-soph division of the Southeast Open.
Caywood is ranked No. 15 at 197 pounds by InterMat this week while Everett has earned a No. 17 ranking at 141.
Cal Poly will counter with 157-pounder Colt Shorts, who has a 4-2 record with one fall, and a pair of matmen with 3-3 marks -- 133-pounder Yoshito Funakoshi and 285-pounder Spencer Empey.
Blake Kastl is 2-2 at 165.
Colton Schilling, 4-1 at 141 pounds, is sidelined with an injury.
Cal Poly and Army have met twice before for dual meets and the Mustangs won both in 1970 and 1972.
Cal Poly competed in six dual meets during the first two weekends of the season. After the dual against Army, the Mustangs will head to Clovis North High School on Sunday for the Roadrunner Open hosted by CSU Bakersfield.
Cal Poly will compete in two more tournaments during the month of December -- the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 2-3 and the Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 18.
The dual meet season resumes Jan. 3 with the Mustangs hosting West Virginia. Other January home dual meets include Wyoming on Jan. 20, Air Force on Jan. 22 and a pair of matches at Righetti High School on Jan. 28 against North Dakota State and CSU Bakersfield.
The Pac-12 Championship will be hosted by Stanford on Feb. 25 with the NCAA Division I National Championship slated for March 16-18 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
