SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Freshman right-hander Jarred Zill earned his first collegiate victory and teamed with three relievers on a four-hitter as Cal Poly defeated Pepperdine 9-1 in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday night in Baggett Stadium.
Zill (1-1) allowed one run and two hits with six strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings while Michael Gomez, Justin Calomeni and Taylor Chris combined for 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief for the Mustangs, who avenged a 10-inning 9-8 loss to the Waves last week in Malibu and improved to 11-18 for the season.
Pepperdine fell to 17-17.
Pepperdine third baseman Chris Fornaci, who hit a walk-off home run in the 10th inning eight days earlier, led off Wednesday's game with another solo blast, his fifth of the year.
Cal Poly bounced back with a run in the bottom of the first on Zack Zehner's two-out single up the middle, snapped the 1-1 deadlock with two runs in the second on a groundout and sacrifice fly and pulled away with four in the fourth and single runs in the sixth and seventh frames.
Zehner (pictured at right) collected three of Cal Poly's nine hits, all singles, while catcher Brett Barbier added two singles. Both center fielder Jordan Ellis and first baseman Ryan Drobny contributed doubles.
Drobny's double down the left-field line on an 0-2 count knocked in two runs in the fourth inning. Three of Cal Poly's runs in the game came courtesy of sacrifice flies.
The loss went to Max Green (0-1), the second of seven Pepperdine pitchers used in the game. Pitching for the first time this season, Green allowed three runs (two earned) and one hit in two innings, walking two.
Pepperdine's four hits included the home run by Fornaci and singles by three different players.
Cal Poly played errorless defense for the 11th time this season. The Mustangs have committed just four errors in their last 10 games, including seven errorless contests, after making 36 miscues in their first 19 contests this season.
Cal Poly returns to Big West Conference play this weekend, hosting Hawai'i for a three-game series Friday through Sunday in Baggett Stadium.
