BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – David Metzgar's single to left field in the ninth inning completed CSU Bakersfield's comeback from a 4-0 deficit as the Roadrunners defeated Cal Poly 5-4 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday night at Hardt Field.
With its 13th win in its last 15 games, CSU Bakersfield improved to 27-15-1 while Cal Poly fell to 19-22. The Roadrunners avenged a 13-2 loss to the Mustangs on Feb. 24 in Baggett Stadium.
Cal Poly jumped to an early 4-0 lead with a run in the first inning and three more in the second.
Mark Mathias singled to open the game and, one out later, Brian Mundell doubled to right-center field, scoring Mathias.
In the second, Jordan Ellis, Tommy Pluschkell and Mathias all singled for a 2-0 Mustang lead. With two outs, Mundell singled to knock in another run and Zack Zehner capped the rally with an RBI double.
Right-hander Garrett Nimmo replaced CSU Bakersfield starter Alec Daily after Daily gave up a single and a walk in the third frame and shut down the Mustang offense for the rerst of the game.
Nimmo retired the first 14 Cal Poly batters he faced before giving up a two-out single to Brett Barbier in the seventh.
Meanwhile, the Roadrunners rallied with two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to catch the Mustangs at 4-4.
Three singles and a pair of sacrifice flies netted two runs in the sixth and three singles were followed by two wild pitches in the seventh which knotted the score. Another CSU Bakersfield runner was called out for missing home plate on a single by Metzgar, resulting in the ejection of Daily and Roadrunner head coach Bill Kernen.
In the Roadrunner ninth, Jordy Hein reached first on a throwing error by Mathias, moved to second on a balk, took third on a sacrifice bunt by Joey Sanchez and, with the Mustangs playing with five infielders, Metzgar lined a single to left field to drive home Hein with the winning run.
Mundell had three hits while Mathias, Barbier and Ryan Drobny each collected two of Cal Poly's 11 hits.
Hein singled three times and Metzgar added two hits for CSU Bakersfield.
Nimmo (2-2) earned the win, allowing three hits over seven scoreless innings with one walk and nine strikeouts. The loss went to Erich Uelmen (0-1), the fourth of four Mustang pitchers used in the game. Starter Jarred Zill pitched five scoreless innings before giving up two runs in the sixth.
Cal Poly returns home to host CSUN for three Big West Conference games this weekend in Baggett Stadium.
