SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Right-hander Duncan Robinson allowed just one run over eight innings and Dartmouth broke up a scoreless pitchers' duel with seven runs in the sixth and seventh frames for a 7-1 victory over Cal Poly in a non-conference baseball game Monday night in Baggett Stadium.
The Big Green concluded its nine-game, six-day swing through California with a 1-8 record and improved to 2-14 on the year.
Cal Poly, held to seven hits, fell to 7-14 with its third straight loss ending an eight-game home stand. The Mustangs are 4-9 at home this season, a year after going 29-5 on their home turf.
Robinson (1-1) and Mustang freshman right-hander Andrew Bernstein tossed five scoreless frames in just over an hour before Dartmouth broke through for five runs in the sixth on four hits, two walks and a pair of wild pitches. Right fielder Kyle Holbrook provided the key hit, a two-run triple to right-center field, and center fielder Nick Ruppert added a two-run single up the middle.
Cal Poly answered with one run in the bottom of the sixth as junior shortstop Peter Van Gansen led off with a triple to right field and came home on junior first baseman Brian Mundell's grounder to shortstop.
Dartmouth completed the scoring with two runs in the seventh on three straight doubles by left fielder Ben Socher, designated hitter Joe Purritano and third baseman Nick Lombardi.
Cal Poly loaded the bases in the fifth inning with one out, but a foul pop-up and a grounder to shortstop ended the threat. The Mustangs also filled the sacks with one out in the seventh, but a 1-2-3 double play dashed that rally.
Cal Poly's seven hits included two singles by junior left fielder Ryan Drobny (pictured above).
Socher and Lombardi each collected two of Dartmouth's 11 hits. The Big Green doubled five times and tripled once.
Robinson walked one and struck out four for the win, scattering seven hits over eight innings. Mike Concato tossed a scoreless ninth, retiring the side in order, two via strikeout.
Bernstein (3-2) suffered the loss, giving up all five runs in the sixth. Sophomore right-hander Slater Lee pitched two scoreless frames in relief.
Cal Poly, which lost two of three games to No. 8 Southern California over the weekend, plays a three-game series this weekend against another top-25 team from the Pac-12 Conference, visiting Oregon State for contests Friday through Sunday.
