SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Sacramento State scored a pair of unearned runs in the fourth inning and Brennan Leitao and Chad Perry made them stand up, combining on a three-hit shutout for a 2-0 victory over Cal Poly on Friday night in Baggett Stadium.
Leitao (1-1) allowed three hits, no walks and struck out seven in eight innings for the win while Perry gave up a two-out walk but nothing else in the ninth for his first save.
With the win, Sacramento State improved to 9-7 for the season and evened its baseball series against Cal Poly at a game apiece. Game three of the four-game series will be played Saturday night at 6 with the finale Sunday afternoon at 1.
Cal Poly, which committed three errors in a game for the fifth time this season -- the Mustangs accomplished that feat just three times in a 47-win campaign a year ago -- and was shut out for the third time this year, fell to 5-10. Cal Poly was shut out just twice a year ago.
Cal Poly junior right-hander Casey Bloomquist (0-2) (pictured at right) had his longest outing of the year, going 7 2/3 innings and striking out nine with two walks, scattering five hits, but was victimized by a pair of infield errors in the fourth.
Left fielder Chris Lewis seized the moment, his two-run single to right-center field with the bases loaded driving home the only runs of the game.
Cal Poly's three hits were singles by junior designated hitter Mark Mathias, sophomore second baseman Alec Smith and sophomore pinch hitter Kevin Morgan, his third pinch hit of the season. No other Mustang has a pinch hit this year.
Cal Poly never had a runner at third base and only two reached second base.
Sacramento State was limited to just five hits, including two singles by center fielder Nathan Lukes.
Saturday's third game of the series will feature a pair of southpaws on the mound. Cal Poly freshman Kyle Smith (1-2, 5.28 ERA) will face Sacramento State junior Sam Long (3-0, 2.55 ERA).
