SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – A dropped fly ball on a sacrifice fly by Chad De La Guerra allowed the go-ahead run to score as Grand Canyon snapped a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning and held on to beat Cal Poly 4-2 in the second game of a non-conference baseball series Saturday night before 1,579 in Baggett Stadium.
The run gave the visiting Antelopes a 3-2 lead and they added an insurance run in the ninth to improve to 6-0 on the year.
Cal Poly, which has yet to be outhit in a game this season, outhitting Grand Canyon 6-5 Saturday, fell to 1-5.
Mustang freshman southpaw Kyle Smith (0-2) (pictured at right) pitched well enough to win, allowing three runs and three hits in five innings. He retired the first 12 Grand Canyon batters of the game and struck out eight in a row in the first three innings.
The win was earned by Jake Repavich (2-0), the second of four Grand Canyon pitchers used in the game. He struck out two in one scoreless inning of work. Mick Vorhof tossed three scoreless, hitless innings for his first save.
Cal Poly's six hits included a double by senior center fielder Jordan Ellis and a run-scoring triple by senior right fielder Zack Zehner.
Left fielder David Walker produced a single and double for Grand Canyon. First baseman Humberto Aranda also doubled.
Cal Poly scored its only runs of the game in the fifth inning. Zehner's triple pushed across the first run and Ryan Drobny's bunt single scored Zehner.
Cal Poly left runners in scoring position in three of the first four innings and also left the bases loaded in the sixth, stranding 11 runners on the basepaths for the game.
With the win, Grand Canyon, a 10-4 winner over Cal Poly on Friday night, clinches the series.
Final game of the series will be played Sunday at 1 o'clock with Cal Poly sophomore right-hander Justin Calomeni to face Grand Canyon junior right-hander Cameron Brendel.
