SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's cross country team edged UC Santa Barbara at the Lagoon Open on Saturday afternoon 25-34, while the Mustangs came in second in the men's race, 15-40. Westmont also fielded runners at the annual meet.
Gaucho senior Dani Moreno won the women's 5K with a time of 17 minutes, 21.91 seconds, but the Mustangs swept the third through seventh spots at the venue that started behind the campus' University Center, teaming to boost themselves to the victory — the program's sixth straight in the Blue-Green Rivalry.
Mary Jo Wright, a sophomore pictured at right, paced Cal Poly with a third-place run of 17:56.91, followed in order by freshman Melissa Eisele (18:02.74), junior Meghan Breadmore (18:10.85), sophomore Ashley Windsor (18:11.87) and redshirt freshman Molly Haar (18:12.76).
Completing the deep scoring for the Mustangs (who were recently ranked 12th in the preseason West Region coaches poll), senior Ashley Bergstrom added a ninth-place 18:15.01, trailed closely by freshman teammate Sydney Szabo (18:15.36).
UCSB junior Bryan Guijarro won the men's 8K at 24:50.36.
Mustang junior Al Gamez finished eighth, in 25:27.88, just ahead of fellow junior Tyler Huntley at 25:31.64.
Also tacking on top-15 performances were sophomores Dimitri Voytilla (11th at 25:39.31) and Clayton Hutchins (12th, 25:43.37), junior Kyle Lynch (14th, 25:57.61) and freshman Devon Grove (15th, 25:58.03).
