Cal Poly Sand Volleyball Eliminated in Two at Pac-12 Invitational

SANTA MONICA – Three different Mustang combinations produced victory on Saturday at the USC-hosted Pac-12 Invitational at Annenberg Community Beach House, but the Cal Poly sand volleyball program was eliminated from the bracket in two matches and closed the team's inaugural season with a 3-2 loss to Arizona and 4-1 defeat to Bakersfield.
During Saturday morning's opening match against Arizona (7-8), the Mustang duo of junior Megan Groess and sophomore Nicole Kessler prevailed at the No. 2 position against Madi Kingdon and Ronni Lewis (21-19, 19-21, 15-12) while, at No. 5, the Cal Poly freshman pairing of Anna Gorman and Lexi Reddick eased past Jazmine Campas and Emily Kiser (21-12, 21-8).
The Mustangs, however, dropped their remaining three matchups. At No. 1, senior Jennifer Keddy and sophomore Katie Conroy fell similarly to Arizona's Madison and McKenna Witt (21-17, 21-17) while, at the third spot, Rachel Rhoades and Sarah Seiber topped Cal Poly senior Kate Walters and sophomore Hannah Schleis (21-16, 21-13). Arizona wrapped victory with Taylor Arizobal and Allie Cook topping Mustang freshmen Shannon Fouts and Taylor Gruenewald at No. 4, 21-12, 21-10.
During Saturday's 12 noon elimination matchup versus Bakersfield (8-9), Walters and Schleis (top) registered Cal Poly's lone win at the No. 3 spot by recovering to post an 18-21, 22-20, 15-8 triumph against Lisa Bartsch and Julia Bowen. At No. 1, however, Bakersfield's Debora Araujo and Molly O'Hagan bettered Keddy and Conroy (21-19, 21-14), while at No. 2, Mariah Alvidrez and Shayna Guitare got past Groess and Kessler (21-10, 21-11). Fouts and Gruenewald dropped a 21-8, 22-20 decision at No. 4 to Sydney Haynes and Danika Youngblood while, at the fifth position, Gorman and Reddick were on the downside to Sara Little and Hazel Perrens, 21-10, 21-16.
Cal Poly finished the program's first sand volleyball season with a 2-11 record.
