Cal Poly Sand Volleyball Edged by Sacramento State, California

BERKELEY – Freshmen Shannon Fouts and Taylor Gruenewald were two-time winners on Saturday afternoon, but the Cal Poly sand volleyball program dropped a pair of tight matches, falling to Sacramento State and California by 3-2 margins.
During Saturday's opening matchup versus Sacramento State, Fouts and Gruenewald powered past Sacramento State's Morgan Stanley and Kendall LaVine (21-16, 21-8) at the No. 4 position while, at No. 3, Mustang senior Kate Walters and sophomore Hannah Schleis produced a 21-16, 24-22 victory over Lauren Aikels and Chelcy Motes.
Cal Poly, however, dropped its remaining three matches. At No. 1 Cal Poly's Nicole Kessler and Megan Groess fell to Kayla Beal and Katie Aprile (21-17, 21-11) while, at No. 2, senior Jennifer Keddy and sophomore Katie Conroy were stopped by Madeline Cannon and Sloan Lovett (21-17, 21-17). Sacramento State rounded off victory at No. 5 with Lexie Skalbeck and Courtney Dietrich bettering Cal Poly's Anna Gorman and Stacia Williams, 21-18, 21-6.
During Saturday's second match against California, Fouts and Gruenewald returned to roll past the Golden Bear duo of Katarina Milosavljevic and Sabrina Blackwell, 21-15, 21-18. Cal Poly's other victory came at the No. 5 spot, with Williams and Gorman besting Emily Lunt and Caroline Olson, 25-23, 21-16.
In the remaining matches versus California, Groess and Kessler fell to Adrienne Gehan and Joan Caloiaro at No. 1 (21-17, 21-12), Keddy and Conroy lost to Sarah Cole and Lara Vukasovic at No. 2 (21-11, 21-9) and Walters and Schleis were on the downside at No. 3 to Maddy Kerr and Nikki Gombar (21-15, 21-18).
Cal Poly (1-7) returns to the sand when competing at the April 18 Irvine Valley College Tournament.
