SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Nick Torres knocked in both Cal Poly runs while Brandon Roberts scored both Alumni runs after walks as the 2014 Cal Poly Baseball Alumni Game ended in a nine-inning 2-2 tie Saturday afternoon at Baggett Stadium.
Torres (pictured at right) led Cal Poly's six-hit offensive attack with two singles and a double. The Alumni compiled seven hits, including two singles by Pat Pezet and doubles by Adam Melker and Matt Canepa.
Danny Zandona pitched four scoreless innings for the Mustangs, allowing four hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Michael Dingilian, Nick Suniga, Jearl Jesson, Bryan Granger and Reed Reilly also pitched for Cal Poly.
Kyle Brueggemann pitched two scoreless frames for the Alumni and was followed by Frankie Reed, Dennis LeDuc, Joey Wagman, Kyle Anderson, Chase Johnson, Michael Holback and Steven Fischback.
The 2014 Mustangs scored single runs in the third and fifth innings. Torres doubled to knock in the first run and singled to drive home the second marker.
The Alumni countered with single runs in the fifth and seventh frames. Roberts walked and eventually scored the initial tally on a groundout by Ryan Lee. After he walked in the seventh, Roberts came home when Elliot Stewart was picked off base.
Former Mustang pitcher Bud Norris, who recently signed a $5.3 million contract with the Baltimore Orioles, was spotted in street clothes playing left field. Logan Schafer, currently on the Milwaukee Brewers roster, drew a pair of walks and played center field.
Rain began falling in the eighth inning, but the game was completed.
Prior to the game, a moment of silence was observed in the memory of former Cal Poly pitcher Nick Doan (2002-03), who died in December at age 34 after a long battle with brain cancer.
Cal Poly officially opens the 2014 season by hosting NCAA Super Regionalist Kansas State for a three-game series Friday through Sunday in Baggett Stadium.
