REGIONAL HOSTS ANNOUNCED BY NCAA (pdf)
STOCKTON, Calif. – Cal Poly's bid for its third 40-win season Saturday afternoon fell short as Pacific parlayed 12 hits and three errors into a 7-4 victory on the final day of the regular season Saturday afternoon at Klein Family Field.
Coach Larry Lee's Mustangs finish in a tie for second place with UC Santa Barbara in the Big West Conference standings, both 17-10. The Gauchos defeated UC Davis 5-3.
Cal Poly, which had a six-game winning streak snapped, will take a 39-17 record into the NCAA Division I regionals next weekend. Regional sites will be announced Sunday at 6 p.m. on NCAA.com/cws and on the Bottomline of the ESPN family of networks. First-round pairings will be revealed Monday at 9 a.m. on ESPNU.
Pacific sophomore starter Mike Hager, who entered the game with a 1-5 record and 6.05 ERA, silenced the Mustang bats for seven innings before surrendering three unearned runs in the eighth. Senior catcher Elliot Stewart tripled to knock in two and freshman first baseman John Schuknecht singled up the middle to score Stewart.
Sophomore center fielder Jordan Ellis (pictured at right) tripled to drive in a run in the ninth, but the late Mustang rally fell three runs short.
Cal Poly had two other scoring opportunities and couldn't convert.
The Mustangs had runners at first and second with one out in the third inning and a fly ball to right field and a pickoff ended the threat.
Cal Poly also loaded the bases in the fourth with one out, but a strikeout and grounder to first base quelled that rally.
Hager scattered nine hits over 7 2/3 innings with no walks and four strikeouts for his second victory of the season. Cal Poly beat Hager a year ago at Baggett Stadium, 6-4.
Mustang starter Casey Bloomquist (6-2) suffered the loss, surrendering four runs and six hits in 2 1/3 innings with two walks and one strikeout.
Cal Poly's 11 hits included a triple and single by Ellis and two singles each by Schuknecht and junior third baseman Jimmy Allen.
Both Schuknecht and senior second baseman Denver Chavez extended their hitting streaks to seven games with singles while junior left fielder David Armendariz singled in the fourth inning to extend his hitting streak to eight games. A fourth-inning double by sophomore right fielder Nick Torres extended his streak to seven games.
Pacific accumulated 12 hits, including two hits each by Dustin Torchio, Gio Brusa, Jason Taasaas and Jason Goulder.
The Tigers, who finish the year 15-39 and 7-20 in Big West games, scored a run in the first, three in the third, one in the fifth and two in the seventh for a 7-0 lead before Cal Poly staged its late-inning comeback.
