Cal Poly Wrestling Team Breezes Past San Francisco State, 25-13

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Michael Clemmensen won by fall and Boris Novachkov earned a technical fall as No. 18 Cal Poly breezed past Division II San Francisco State 25-13 in a non-conference dual wrestling meet Friday night.
Major decisions by Ryan Smith at 197 pounds and Atticus Disney at 285 pounds helped Cal Poly overcome an early 7-6 deficit as the Mustangs improved to 4-2 overall.
San Francisco State fell to 3-4. Cal Poly is now 39-1 all-time against the Gators.
Clemmensen, a freshman 125-pounder from Atascadero, built a 15-2 lead with 14 near-fall points before pinning Martin Ruiz in 6 minutes, 11 seconds for his first college victory.
Novachkov (pictured at right), ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation at 141 pounds, scored a quartet of three-point near falls in the first period and his second takedown of the match early in the second round sealed a 16-0 technical fall against Daniel Flores and also clinched the dual meet victory for the Mustangs.
Smith, now 15-8 on the year, recorded seven takedowns – four in the second period – en route to a 16-5 victory over Thomas Martin.
Disney jumped to a 6-2 lead over Mark Martelaro in the first period and notched five total takedowns on his way to a 13-3 major decision.
In other bouts, Gianpier Yanez earned a 4-3 decision over Vincente Aboytes in the opening bout at 157 pounds while Dominic Kastl decisioned Arman Ostadsharif 6-2 at 174 pounds.
Cal Poly returns to action Sunday against No. 22 Stanford in a 1 p.m. Pac-12 dual meet inside Mott Gym.
Stanford is 5-5 overall (2-0 in Pac-12 matches) and sports a pair of nationally ranked wrestlers.
Sunday's dual will be highlighted by the matchup at 174 as No. 4 Ryan DesRoches of Cal Poly, who did not wrestle Friday, puts his perfect 19-0 record on the line against top-ranked Nick Amuchastegui of Stanford, 13-0 on the year. The two seniors will meet for the first time in a college match Sunday.
DesRoches has earned first-place finishes in the Cowboy Open, Las Vegas Invitational and Reno Tournament of Champions this season. The Riverside High School (Deer Park, Wash.) graduate is 102-31 in his Mustang career, is a two-time NCAA qualifier and twice has placed third in the Pac-12 finals.
Amuchastegui, a graduate of Phoenix High School in Oregon, is 107-18 in his Stanford career. He was a Pac-12 champion in 2010 and placed second as a freshman and junior. Amuchastegui is a three-time NCAA qualifier, finishing second last year and fourth in 2010.
Stanford's other nationally ranked wrestler is 133-pounder Ryan Mango (19-5), listed No. 7 in three of the four national polls this week and No. 9 by InterMat. He finished fourth in the Pac-12 finals at 125 pounds a year ago en route to a sixth-place national finish.
Stanford has beaten Cal State Bakersfield 28-9 and Boise State 20-16 in Pac-12 matches and also owns non-conference dual meet wins over North Central College, Northern Illinois and Menlo College. The Cardinal placed 25th in the Las Vegas Invitational, 16th in the Reno Tournament of Champions and 25th in the Midlands Championship.
