STOCKTON, Calif. – Held to just four runs and 10 hits in the first two games of the series, Cal Poly exploded for seven runs and nine hits in the first four innings Sunday, belted four home runs in the seventh inning and coasted to a 21-0 victory over Pacific in the finale of a Big West Conference baseball series at Klein Family Field.
Sophomore right-hander Joey Wagman (4-2) was the beneficiary of all the offense, including a pair of three-run home runs by Tim Wise. Wagman pitched seven scoreless innings and allowed just two singles, both in the fourth inning. He retired the side in order six times and recorded no walks and three strikeouts.
In winning a series against Pacific for the 12th straight year, Cal Poly hit six home runs on the day and improved to 26-23 on the year, moving three games above the .500 mark for the first time this season. The Mustangs finish Big West play with a 15-9 mark for third place.
Pacific fell to 16-34 and 8-13.
Cal Poly produced season highs for runs (21) and hits (22) and has won five of its last six games, earning its sixth series win of the year.
Junior center fielder Bobby Crocker produced his first five-hit game of the season and second of his career, going 5-for-6 with two home runs, a double and two singles. He hit two home runs in a game for the first time in his Mustang career.
Freshman left fielder Jimmy Allen had three hits, giving him 11 hits in his last 18 at-bats and five consecutive multiple-hit games. His recent streak has lifted Allen's batting average 66 points to .270.
Wise, shortstop Mike Miller, right fielder Mitch Haniger and third baseman Michael Hoo each added two hits for Cal Poly.
Crocker opened the game with a double off the wall in left-center field and eventually scored in the first inning on a grounder to shortstop by DJ Gentile.
The Mustangs broke the game open with back-to-back three-run rallies in the third and fourth frames, producing four hits in each inning.
A sacrifice fly by Miller, an RBI single by Gentile and a Pacific throwing error accounted for the three runs in the third inning. Evan Busby's two-run double down the right field line and Miller's run-scoring single in the fourth gave Cal Poly a 7-0 cushion.
Another Pacific throwing error allowed Cal Poly to tally a run in the sixth and the Mustangs erupted for their biggest inning of the season in the seventh, tallying nine runs on seven hits.
Jordan Hadlock, Allen and Crocker belted back-to-back-to-back home runs to kickstart the rally and Wise capped the uprising with a three-run blast. Hoo and Haniger added RBI singles in the frame.
Wise added his other three-run shot down the left-field line in the ninth, his third of the year. Crocker now has five home runs this season -- adding another solo shot in the eighth inning -- while Allen collected his first collegiate home run. Hadlock hit his first of the year.
The loss went to Pacific starter Jake Hummel (4-5), who allowed seven runs and 10 hits in five innings with two walks and one strikeout.
Pacific's three hits were singles by Matthew Carvutto and Brian Martin, both with two outs in the fourth inning, and Tyger Pederson leading off the ninth.
Junior Eugene Wright and freshman Chase Johnson each pitched a scoreless inning in relief of Wagman (pictured above).
Cal Poly, playing its final seven games of the year on the road, visits Stanford on Tuesday night and Cal State Bakersfield for a three-game non-conference series next weekend.
