Mustangs Drop Big West Series Opener to Pacific, 6-1

STOCKTON, Calif. – Pacific scored six times in the first five innings off junior right-hander Mason Radeke and the Tigers went on to beat Cal Poly 6-1 in the opener of a three-game Big West Conference baseball series Friday night at Klein Family Field.

Radeke (8-3) allowed six runs and nine hits in five innings with four walks and three strikeouts in his second-shortest outing of the season. He threw 105 pitches.

With the loss, Cal Poly falls to 24-23 for the season and 13-9 in Big West games. Pacific improved to 16-32 and 8-11.

Pacific scored the first three runs of the game – one in the first and two in the second – before Cal Poly got on the scoreboard in the third inning. Jimmy Allen doubled with one out and scored on Mike Miller's single to left field.

But the Tigers restored their three-run advantage with a run in the fourth and extended their lead to 6-1 on Josh Simms' two-run home run in the fifth frame.

Cal Poly had other scoring chances besides the third inning, but stranded five runners in scoring position and left eight on base for the game.

The Mustangs mustered five hits, including a double and single by Allen (pictured above).

Pacific's 12-hit offensive attack included a single, double and home run by left fielder Matthew Carvutto and three singles by first baseman Brian Martin. Third baseman Dustin Torchio and Simms each added two hits.

Starter Robbie Richardson, in his first start of the season, entered the game with a 7.23 ERA but allowed just one run and four hits in five innings for the win. Reliever John Prato Matthews, author of a 12.81 ERA, picked up his first save by pitching four scoreless innings and allowing one hit with two strikeouts.

Second game of the series will be played Saturday night with senior right-hander Steven Fischback (6-2, 3.45 ERA) on the mound for Cal Poly against Pacific senior right-hander Marcus Pointer (4-6, 5.51 ERA).
