MORAGA, Calif. – A pair of Cal Poly errors early in the contest led to three unearned runs and Saint Mary's also took advantage of 13 walks en route to an 11-1 victory in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field.
Cal Poly right fielder Mitch Haniger's one-out solo home run in the second inning tied the game at 1-1, but the Gaels scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning and broke the game open with three runs in the fifth and seventh innings, improving to 20-24 for the season.
Cal Poly, which mustered just four hits in the game, fell to 21-22.
Saint Mary's scored a run off Mustang starter Eugene Wright in the first inning as Justin Fazio doubled and came home on Patrick Wisdom's single up the middle.
Haniger's home run in the second inning was his fourth of the season and third in Cal Poly's last four games.
The Gaels snapped the 1-1 tie in the bottom of the second. A throwing error with two outs by third baseman J.J. Thompson allowed the first run to score and Brenden Kalfus tripled to the gap in right-center field to score another run and a 3-1 Saint Mary's lead.
Cal Poly drew three walks in the fourth, but couldn't take advantage and Saint Mary's broke the game open in the fifth inning with three runs, one unearned, on three walks, two singles and a Mustang error in the outfield.
The Gaels scored three more runs in the seventh on two singles and four walks, two with the bases loaded. In his first appearance on the mound since April 10, Mustang closer Jeff Johnson faced five batters in the seventh, giving up two singles and two walks for three runs.
An RBI double by Riley Heinzer and a sacrifice fly by Michael Gastelum in the eighth inning completed the scoring for Saint Mary's.
In addition to Haniger's (pictured above) home run, Cal Poly's only other hits were a leadoff single by Denver Chavez in the sixth inning, a one-out seventh-inning single by Matt Jensen and a two-out ninth-inning double by Tim Wise.
Cal Poly hitters struck out 11 times off a quartet of Saint Mary's pitchers.
The win went to Patrick Keane (2-0), who pitched 1 2/3 innings with one walk and one strikeout.
Wright (0-3) suffered the loss. After giving up three runs in the first two innings, Wright retired nine in a row before Saint Mary's scored two more runs off Wright in the fifth. In 4 2/3 innings, Wright walked four and struck out two.
Wright was one of eight pitchers used by Cal Poly. The 13 walks issued by the hurlers ties the school Division I record accomplished three times before.
Cal Poly returns home to host UC Davis for a three-game Big West Conference series Friday through Sunday in Baggett Stadium.
