SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Junior left-hander Kyle Anderson pitched five scoreless innings and Cal Poly produced a 14-hit offensive attack as the Mustangs defeated Santa Clara 7-2 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday night at Stephen Schott Stadium.
Mitch Haniger and Elliot Stewart belted solo home runs and Bobby Crocker singled three times and scored twice for the Mustangs, who improved to 12-16 on the year.
Santa Clara fell to 12-17. The two teams play another midweek game May 17 at Baggett Stadium.
Anderson (2-5) scattered six hits in five innings with no walks and four strikeouts. Freshman southpaw Taylor Chris tossed two scoreless innings while senior left-hander Tommy Erlin pitched one scoreless inning. Right-hander Joey Wagman gave up two unearned runs in the ninth.
Cal Poly scored three times in the first inning and never looked back, adding two in the fifth on the pair of solo home runs by Haniger, his first, and Stewart, his second. The Mustangs also scored single runs in the sixth and seventh frames.
In the first, Cal Poly parlayed five hits into three runs, including RBI doubles by Mike Miller and DJ Gentile plus a sacrifice fly by J.J. Thompson.
Following the pair of home runs in the fifth – Cal Poly's sixth and seventh of the year – Thompson singled to drive in a run in the sixth and extend his hitting streak to six games while Miller singled to knock in the seventh-inning run.
Cal Poly's 14 hits were one shy of its season-high of 15 in an 11-0 win over Valparaiso in early March. The Mustangs reached double digits in hits for only the second time in their last 15 games.
Crocker reached base five times with three singles and two walks, lifting his average to .330. Miller, Gentile and Stewart each recorded a pair of hits – Miller driving in a pair of runs. He leads the Big West Conference with his .375 average.
Santa Clara's 11 hits included three by center fielder Matt Ozanne and two each by first baseman Curtis Wagner and shortstop Blake Leyva.
The Broncos averted a shutout with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, scoring two unearned runs on an error, a walk and three singles.
The loss went to sophomore right-hander Chris Mendoza (2-4), who allowed three runs and six hits in 3 1/3 innings with four walks and one strikeout.
Cal Poly, which has played its last five games on the road and won for just the third time away from Baggett Stadium, will open a seven-game homestand this weekend with a three-game Big West Conference series against Cal State Northridge. Games on Friday and Saturday nights start at 6 o'clock, with the series finale Sunday to begin at 1 p.m.
Next week, Cal Poly hosts Fresno State on Tuesday night at 6 and Cal State Fullerton for another three-game Big West series Thursday through Saturday.
