SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Junior southpaw Kyle Anderson pitched six scoreless innings, scattering five hits, and Cal Poly put together a season-high 15-hit offensive attack en route to an 11-0 victory over Valparaiso in a non-conference baseball game Saturday night in Baggett Stadium.
Anderson (1-2) walked one and struck out four, lowering his ERA to 1.15.
With the win, Coach Larry Lee's Mustangs improve to 3-6 with a three-game winning streak following a season-opening six-game losing streak. Valparaiso, near the end of a nine-game swing through California, fell to 1-10.
Cal Poly's last shutout was a 13-0 triumph at Fresno State on April 29, 2007.
Freshman Chase Johnson tossed two scoreless innings with three strikeouts and Taylor Chris, another freshman, closed it out with a perfect ninth inning, striking out two.
Junior center fielder Bobby Crocker (pictured above), junior shortstop Mike Miller and junior designated hitter Elliot Stewart each had two of Cal Poly's 15 hits against the Crusaders.
Crocker lifted his average to .306 with a single and two-run double while Miller singled twice and Stewart drove in a run with his two singles. Senior first baseman J.J. Thompson and freshman left fielder David Armendariz each contributed doubles.
Valparaiso's six hits included a single and double by right fielder Kyle Gaedele and two singles by left fielder Steven Scoby.
Southpaw Tyler Deetjen (1-2), who scattered four hits in a seven-inning 2-1 win at Cal State Northridge last Sunday, surrendered 10 runs (eight earned) and 11 hits in four innings.
Cal Poly erupted for seven runs in the third inning, added three more in the fourth for a 10-0 lead and coasted to the series-clinching victory.
The Mustangs' team batting average has risen 18 points to .280 with 24 hits in the first two games of the series.
Final game of the series will be played Sunday at 1 o'clock with senior right-hander Steven Fischback (0-0, 6.75 ERA) on the mound for Cal Poly against Valparaiso senior southpaw Jon Gulbransen (0-1, 5.73 ERA).
