Cal Poly Falls to Pepperdine, 5-3

MALIBU, Calif. -- Pepperdine took advantage of four Cal Poly errors and overcame a 3-1 deficit with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning en route to a 5-3 non-conference baseball win Tuesday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

The loss spoiled a fine start by Mustang freshman right-hander Chase Johnson, who allowed one run and four hits in 5 1/3 innings. He was not involved in the decision.

With the loss, Cal Poly falls to 7-10. Pepperdine evened its record at 10-10.

Cal Poly jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run double to the gap in left-center field by designated hitter DJ Gentile, the first of his three hits in the game.

After Pepperdine scored a run in the third, Cal Poly restored its two-run advantage to 3-1 on J.J. Thompson's infield grounder with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning.

The Waves grabbed the lead in the bottom of the seventh, parlaying three hits and a pair of Mustang errors into three runs, and added an insurance run in the eighth.

Cal Poly outhit Pepperdine 8-7, led by Gentile's double and two singles.

Center fielder Harrison Kain and first baseman Torrey Jacoby each had two hits for Pepperdine.

The loss went to Mustang southpaw Frankie Reed (0-1), who surrendered the three runs (two earned) in the seventh. Jared Lee (1-0), the third of five Pepperdine pitchers, earned the win.

Cal Poly returns home for a seven-game homestand, beginning with a three-game non-conference series against 2010 NCAA regional qualifier Minnesota (7-7) Friday through Sunday in Baggett Stadium. Opener of the series is set for Friday at 6 p.m., followed by a 4 o'clock contest Saturday and the series finale Sunday at 10 a.m.
