Cal Poly Loses Six Runs and Game to Southern California

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Mother Nature wiped out a six-run sixth-inning Cal Poly rally as Southern California defeated the Mustangs 5-2 in Cal Poly's final game of the USC Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Dedeaux Field.

Cal Poly erased a 5-2 deficit by scoring six times in the top of the sixth inning, taking an 8-5 advantage. Elliot Stewart and Mitch Haniger (pictured above) provided the key hits with two-run doubles.

But the runs were erased when heavy rain soaked Dedeaux Field and the game could not be continued. The score reverted to the last completed inning, the fifth, when the Trojans led 5-2.

USC scored four times in the first inning off freshman right-hander Chase Johnson. Cal Poly bounced back with two runs in the second on RBI singles by J.J. Thompson and Bobby Crocker.

The Trojans got one run back in the fourth for a 5-2 lead and neither team scored in the fifth. The first rain delay lasting 45 minutes halted the game before Cal Poly batted in the sixth, with the second rain delay occurring after the Mustangs scored six times.

The win went to junior right-hander Austin Wood as he allowed two runs and six hits in five innings with one walk and six strikeouts. Johnson took the loss.

On Friday, Missouri scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 10-9 lead before the second rain delay of the game eventually led to calling the contest. Those runs stood up for the 10-9 Tiger victory.

The Mustangs also fell 2-1 to North Carolina on Friday.

Cal Poly (0-3) will visit Oklahoma State in Stillwater, OK, next weekend for a three-game series.
