
Four Cal Poly Wrestlers Place in Cowboy Open

LARAMIE, Wyo. – Cal Poly wrestlers Boris Novachkov and Ryan DesRoches captured individual titles in the Cowboy Open hosted by the University of Wyoming on Saturday.
Novachkov claimed the 141-pound title with two decisions and a pair of technical falls while DesRoches placed first at 174 pounds with four decisions.
In addition, Mustang freshman Dominic Kastl placed second at 165 pounds while Steven Vasquez, also at 165, placed third.
Novachkov worked his way to the 141-pound final with 18-3 and 27-1 technical falls, then edged Dalton Jensen of Nebraska-Kearney 6-5 in the semifinals. The two-time NCAA All-American senior from Sunnyvale, Calif., earned a 2-1 decision against Josh Strait of Boise State in the championship final.
DesRoches (pictured at right) recorded a 2-1 decision over Dallas Hintz of Wyoming, a 12-10 decision over Jared Miller of Montana State-Northern and a 5-3 overtime decision over Patrick Martinez of Wyoming to reach the 175-pound final, where the senior from Deer Park, Wash., edged Shane Woods of Wyoming 3-2.
Kastl won three matches to reach the 165-pound final, including a fall in 4:00 over Islam Abitov of Nebraska-Kearney in the semifinals, then dropped a 7-1 decision to Shane Onufer of Wyoming and settled for second place.
Vasquez won his first two matches by a 9-2 decision and a fall in 4:00 before losing to Onufer 5-1. In the wrestlebacks, Vasquez edged Joey Wilson of Nebraska-Kearney 5-4 and earned a 7-3 decision over Tyler Juby, competing unattached, for third place.
Cal Poly will conduct its Green vs. Gold intrasquad meet Sunday at 1 p.m. inside Mott Gym.
