Vic Buccola is recognized for his outstanding athletic ability and leadership. He participated in football, boxing and track at Cal Poly, receiving All-Conference, Little All-Coast and Little All-American honors.
He received his master's degree from Cal Poly in Physical Education in 1957. From 1973 to 1981 he was the Athletic Director at Cal Poly. During the last five years as director, Cal Poly was ranked first or second nationally in the annual study comparing the overall success of Division II men's athletic programs.
He was the founder and commissioner of the America West Conference. From 1982 to 1993 he was the Commissioner of the Western Football Conference. Buccola was a charter inductee into the Cal Poly Hall of Fame, which he helped create, in 1987.
Today, Vic is happily married to his wife Sally, whom he met at Cal Poly in 1956, the year Cal Poly readmitted women into the university. He has three children and nine grandchildren. He recently moved to Colorado to live closer to family and relatives.
