Marijon Ancich was a four-year varsity letterman for football (fullback, defensive back and linebacker) and a two-year varsity letterman in track while attending Cal Poly.
He was a two time All-CCAA selection for football and went on to have a brilliant coaching career as a high school football coach, compiling a 331-118-10 record in 41 years. His teams won two California state titles and he was selected into the National High School Hall of Fame in 1999.
Many of his high school players have attended Cal Poly and had successful careers as Mustang players. Among those who have played for Ancich and at Cal Poly were Dave Quirk, John Miklas, Greg Lee, Miguel Paredes, Tom Klemens and Craig Johnston.
Ancich coached at St. Paul High in Santa Fe Springs for 37 seasons. He also coached nine seasons at Tustin High, two years as an offensive coordinator at Northern Arizona and one year at Cerritos College as a defensive coordinator.
Ancich's 360 career wins is the second most in California state high school football history. He guided teams to nine CIF-Southern Section title game appearances with three championships. He earned his bachelor's degree at Cal Poly in 1961 and a master's degree at Azusa Pacific in 1980.
Ancich passed away in December 2018
