An All-American as a member of the Cal Poly Women's Cross Country and Track and Field teams, Kristina Hand-Mathias is one of the top female athletes to ever compete at Cal Poly.
A two-time cross country All-American in 1991 and 1992, Kristina was the 1991 Western Regional Cross Country Champion and placed second at the nationals a year later. She led the Mustangs to five NCAA Championships, three in track & field and two in cross country.
A four-time All-American selection from 1989-92, Kristina captured the title in both the 1,500-meter and 3000-meter runs at the 1992 NCAA Division II Championships, becoming the first female ever to win two national titles in a single championship. She successfully defended her 1991 national title in the 1,500 meters.
A two-time California Collegiate Athletic Association Female Athlete of the Year, Kristina was awarded the 1992 Honda NCAA Division II Female Athlete of the Year. This award is considered to be the most prestigious award presented by the NCAA.
