Jim Schankel

By many, Jim Schankel is recognized as the greatest distance runner to ever compete for Cal Poly.
Jim was a dominant performer and almost single-handedly led Cal Poly to two national cross country titles and a pair of national track and field championships. He personally captured eight individual national titles in track and cross country.
Jim collected 12 All-American awards while competing for the Mustangs and still holds numerous records at Cal Poly. Jim is in the record books in the 1,500-, 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs, as well as the two-, three-, and six-mile events.
Schankel currently is a district manager for Valet Waste in Houston. Prior to that,e was a car salesman in the Texas cities of Cypress and Spring.
