Dave Hamer competed in the pole vault at Cal Poly from 1971-74 and twice won NCAA Division II national titles. He was the first vaulter in Division II to clear 17 feet.
Hamer placed fourth in the Division I nationals in 1972 (the three who beat him made up the U.S. Olympic team in the pole vault). He also ran the leadoff leg on Cal Poly's 4-by-100 relay team that placed third in the NCAA Division II championships in 1971 (seventh in the Division I meet) and was an All-American in 1972 by placing sixth in the 110-meter high hurdles.
Hamer was a three-time California Collegiate Athletic Association pole vault champion and also broke the Cal Poly school record in the decathlon in the fall of 1973 (since broken by others).
He was an assistant track coach at UC Santa Barbara in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
