Craig Johnston quarterbacked the 1980 Cal Poly football team to the NCAA Division II National Championship and his three sons, Pat, Phil and Ken, all either played and/or coached football at Cal Poly.
Craig also was a two-time team captain and led Cal Poly to the 1978 playoffs as well. He finished his career as Cal Poly’s passing leader, is now is No. 6 in career passing yards (3,987), No. 6 in single-season passing yards, No. 6 in career completions and No. 9 in career passing touchdowns.
He completed 279 of 508 career passes.
He went on to be a successful football coach and teacher at Carmel High School, earning Mission Trail Athletic League coach of the year honors five times and Monterey County coach of the year once during his 18 years at the helm.
Johnston has authored two books covering the spread no-huddle offense and developing a successful high school football program.
He and his wife Patty, who also graduated from Cal Poly, have been married for 35 years (through 2020).
