On October 29, 1960, a chartered aircraft carrying the Cal Poly Mustang football team crashed on takeoff at the Toledo, Ohio, airport. Sixteen Mustang football players, the team manager and a Mustang Booster were killed in the crash and 22 others were injured.
On Friday, September 29, 2006, to honor the 46th anniversary of the crash, Cal Poly Athletics proudly inducted the entire 1960 Football Team into the Cal Poly Athletics Hall of Fame. The induction took place as survivors and family members of the crash victims came together for the dedication of the Mustang Memorial Plaza at the entrance to Alex G. Spanos Stadium, which honors the victims.
The following night, September 30, 2006, at the game between Southern Utah and Cal Poly, the football field was dedicated at halftime as Mustang Memorial Field as former players, family members and members of the crash victims' families stood at midfield.
