Boyal, Daschian Lead Cal Poly at Dellinger Invitational in Oregon

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — Swarnjit Boyal and Miranda Daschian led Cal Poly at Oregon's Bill Dellinger Cross Country Invitational on Friday morning, each finishing within the top 25 at Springfield Golf Course.

The Mustang men's and women's squads both finished with identical seventh-place scores of 198 points at the meet featuring eight teams ranked in the National Top 25 of the USTFCCCA polls.

Starting with the Men's 8k at 10 a.m., Boyal, a senior, finished 21st with a time of 24:06.3.

Daschian, a redshirt sophomore transfer from Cuesta College (where she won the 2016 CCCAA state crown), came in 24th place in the Women's 6k, at 19:51.6.

Both Boyal and Daschian also paced the Mustangs at this fall's season opener, the Lagoon Dual vs. UC Santa Barbara on Sept. 2.

Led by a medalist performance from Clayton Young (23:42.4), sixth-ranked BYU took Friday's men's team title with 17 points — routing second-ranked Stanford (73) and the No. 8 host Ducks (75).

Washington came in fourth place with 85 points, ahead of Gonzaga (147) and 18th-ranked Portland (186).

Sean McDermott was next for Cal Poly in 45th place with a time of 24:27.0, ahead of Alex Merder in 56th at 24:33.2.

They were followed by Mikey Giguere in 64th (24:42.7) and the defending Big West Conference champion, Clayton Hutchins, 67th in his 2017 debut (at 24:43.8).

The Mustangs also received contributions from Logan Marshall (68th, 24:44.2), Garrett Migliozzi (70th, 24:46.8), Jake Ritter (71st, 24:48.8), Ethan Comeaux (75th, 24:52.6), Chas Cook (82nd, 25:03.4), Peter Cotsirilos (89th, 25:12.6) and Zachary Wims (90th, 25:13.7).

Beginning at 11 a.m., Oregon's Katie Rainsberger shattered the meet record by 37 seconds, claiming the victory at 18:47.6, boosting the second-ranked hosts to the team trophy via 33 points.

No. 5 Stanford was second with 66 points, topping No. 19 BYU (78), No. 11 Washington (95), Portland (136) and Oregon State (190).

True freshman Sierra Brill was next for Cal Poly, taking 38th with a time of 20:10.4, just ahead of junior Julia Vasquez in 44th at 20:20.9.

Angela DiPentino was next for the Mustangs (61st in 20:41.7). She was followed by Maddie McDonald (64th, 20:45.3), Abbey Fisk (67th, 20:48.9), Hannah Hull (68th, 20:51.1), Annie Meeder (69th, 20:51.3), Bryanna Fuller (74th, 21:01.4) and Melodie Leroudier (87th, 21:20.3).

Cal Poly will now train for a duo of meets in mid-October.

The Mustangs will race at the Under Armour Wisconsin Invitational on Oct. 13 before competing at the Bronco Invitational hosted by Santa Clara Oct. 14.
