Cal Poly Cross Country Posts Top-Three Scores at Stanford Invitational

STANFORD, Calif. — Both the women's and men's teams earned top-three finishes for Cal Poly on Saturday morning at the 42nd annual Stanford Cross Country Invitational.

Beginning with the women's 6K on the university's golf course, the Mustangs trailed only the No. 5-ranked hosting Cardinal (who had 44 points) among the 30 programs, compiling a runner-up score of 65.

Peyton Bilo, a true freshman who ran in the top five at each of the initial two meets earlier this month, led the squad this time by crossing in seventh place among the field of 255 competitors — in 20 minutes, 56.0 seconds (49.2 back of the champion, North Dakota State junior Erin Teschuk).

Also in the top 15 for Cal Poly were sophomores Molly Haar (who took 13th, at 21:12.7) and Sydney Szabo (14th, 21:14.7), while junior teammates Ashley Windsor (16th, 21:16.3) and Mary Jo Wright (24th, 21:29.1) also were close behind to account for the remainder of the scoring.

Mustang seniors Meghan Breadmore (21:44.6) and Erika Veidis (21:45.4) also finished next to each other shortly thereafter, taking 31st and 32nd place.

Then some 15 minutes afterward, the men were third out of the 30 schools, racing to a 97-point figure. No. 2 Stanford won the 8K with 62.

It was the third consecutive competition out of the gate this fall in which junior Swarnjit Boyal turned in the Mustangs' fastest performance, as he was eighth among 283 student-athletes, in 24:01.1 (54.1 shy of the winning pace set by Cardinal junior Sean McGorty).

Mustang senior Al Gamez Jr. was also in the top 15, finishing 13th in 24:10.7.

Additionally, junior teammate David Galvez came in 24th place (at 24:26.0), followed by redshirt freshmen Devon Grove and Garrett Migliozzi in 27th (24:29.2) and 37th (24:35.8), respectively, to round out the points total.

The Mustangs will next compete at two meets on Oct. 17 as the build-up toward the Big West Conference Championships continues: the Pre-National Invite (hosted by Louisville beginning at 7 a.m. PDT at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park) and the home Cal Poly Invitational (starting at 9 a.m. on Fairbanks Memorial Course in northwest San Luis Obispo alongside Highway 1).
