Szabo, Boyal Lead Cal Poly at Season-Opening Lagoon Meet at UCSB

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — The Cal Poly cross country team swept the top four spots in the women's race at the Lagoon Open hosted by UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, lifting the Mustangs to a 17-43 win, while the men's squad also placed two runners in the top five during a 24-33 Gaucho outcome.

Beginning with the 5K meet, sophomore Sydney Szabo won with a time of 17:53.85, setting the tone for the Mustang women's seventh consecutive Blue-Green Rivalry victory in the season-opening series. Szabo is coming off a spring in which she earned all-conference track honors in the 10,000 meters.

Behind her, freshman teammate Peyton Bilo took second place, in 17:56.56, followed by junior Ashley Windsor (at 18:10.87) and sophomore Molly Haar (18:20.51).

Also scoring for Cal Poly was senior Sara Van Dyke (in seventh, at 18:29.37), while fellow senior Erika Veidis (eighth; 18:32.97) and junior Mary Hillis (18:35.93) completed the top 10.

A half-hour later starting from University Center, defending Big West champion Bryan Guijarro won on his home course, edging Mustang junior Swarnjit Boyal in the 8K, 24:55.77 to 25:00.80.

Cal Poly senior Luis Morales added a fourth-place showing, at 25:12.64, ahead of redshirt freshman teammate Devon Grove (in sixth, at 25:25.42) and senior Al Gamez Jr. (25:38.77) in the top 10.

The Mustangs will next head to the Fresno State Invitational, held at Woodward Park at 9 a.m. Friday.
