Cal Poly Men Place First, Women Third in WCC Preview Meet


SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Sophomore Clayton Hutchins led a quartet of top-10 Cal Poly finishers, capturing top honors as the Mustangs claimed the team title in the men's division of the West Coast Conference Preview Meet on Saturday at Baylands Park.

Hutchins (pictured at right), from San Anselmo and a graduate of Drake High School, covered the 8,000-meter course in 24 minutes, 19.3 seconds.

Mustang junior Nick Woolf placed third in 24:33.3 while senior Tyler Huntley was sixth in 24:37.9 and junior Dimitri Voytilla finished eighth in 24:46.5.

Rounding out Cal Poly's scoring was junior Riess Haslam, placing 12th in 24:57.1.

Coach Mark Conover's Mustangs tallied 29 points, well ahead of second-place Santa Clara (46). Loyola Marymount placed third in the eight-team field with 82 points.

On the women's side, Cal Poly placed third among 11 schools, scoring 70 points. Loyola Marymount captured the team title with 39 points, with San Francisco second (51).

Four Mustangs finished in the top 15 in the 6,000-meter women's race, led by senior Meghan Breadmore as she placed fourth in 21:18.5.

Freshman Melissa Eisele was ninth in 21:28.7, junior Mary Jo Wright finished 12th in 21:37.5 and freshman Ashley Bergstrom placed 15th in 21:48.4.

Danielle Shanahan led a 1-2 Loyola Marymount finish, taking the women's individual title in 20:50.9.

Cal Poly will compete in the Stanford Invitational on Sept. 27.
